I have over 25 years of experience in education, starting as an instructional assistant at the elementary level, and then a teacher and instructional coach at the middle school level. I was raised here in the Madison Cluster, where I attended elementary, middle and high school. I am proud to now serve as the principal of Hawthorne since 2015, in the same cluster where I first found my love of learning. leading the Hawthorne Huskies continues to be a dream come true and my greatest joy! I hold the highest level of pride for the children of Hawthorne and the amazing staff. Hawthorne is the highest testing school in the Madison Cluster. Our performance on state, district, and classroom assessments is something to be proud of, but also continuously improve. I'm proud that the school was awarded the honor of being a California Distinguished School in 2020! We simply could not have assembled a better team to meet the needs of this community. I will continue to embrace the opportunity improve our school with new programs and by strengthening existing ones. Our mission statement and vision guide the work we do each day. We are committed to The Husky Way in order to develop ourselves as better citizens of the world. The students and staff will also continue to teach social and emotional skills through the highly regarded Second Step Curriculum. This program will teach conflict resolution and emotion processing. The Husky Store will also be open several times during the year so the kids can spend their hard earned Husky Bucks! I am passionate about continuing the great work that is done here. We as a staff are committed to reaching each and every student and making a positive difference in their lives. I believe that incredible growth in all students, teachers, parents, community members, and myself requires risk taking, a growth mindset, and an attitude of leaning--from success and from failures. This is the second year the staff and I are embracing learning around the Science of Reading in order to meet the needs of more readers. Each year the staff chooses personalized professional development in order to improve their own practice as well. I encourage parents and families to get involved with the school, so much so that we have a goal for every parent to volunteer a minimum of 5 hours of service to the school through PTA, working in classrooms, or working from home. It is important to me to know each member of our learning community and to be available and visible on campus. Please come by to chat, send me an email, or call the office.
